Public Notice: Feral Cats

FERAL CATS
As of January 2023, West Hazleton Borough council signed a contract with No Nonsense Neutering to address the issue of feral cats in town. No Nonsense Neutering offers a compassionate and professional service which takes feral cats that have been trapped by West Hazleton residents and gives them basic medical treatment, including getting them spayed or neutered! The animals are then released back where they were found, no longer capable of having kittens and increasing the feral cat population, and no longer posing a risk to the community from diseases such as rabies.

Under our contract, the Borough is able to issue vouchers which makes the cost to residents minimal for a cat to be given this treatment. The Borough also has humane cat traps which are available to be loaned out for residents’ use. For residents wishing to borrow a trap to catch a feral cat, we ask for a signed contract, a security deposit of $25 (which is returned when the trap is brought back to us) and photo ID. The contracts and traps are available at the Borough office at 100 South 4th Street, Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. Please call ahead (570-455-7851) so that we can make sure that we have traps available for you.

Please note that only FERAL CATS, NOT PETS, are eligible for the traps and vouchers. However, if you have pet cats needing a spay or neuter, No Nonsense Neutering will be glad to perform that service at a very reasonable price. Please contact them at www.nnnlv.org for appointments.

MS4 and Stormwater Management

WHAT IS MS4?

The Borough of West Hazleton is required to obtain a stormwater discharge permit under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) from the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). This permit allows the Borough to operate their storm sewer system, called a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4). The permit requires the Borough to take certain steps to ensure that the stormwater is properly managed and controlled. The permit also requires that the Borough educate the public about storm water impacts and provide opportunities for the public to get involved and participate in program events.
